Viewing a part from an off-axis position generally leads to keyhole distortion of the image, loss of focus in parts of the image, or a combination of both. The VU1/1 uses the century-old Scheimpflug principle to correct these defects producing an in-focus, undistorted image of the complete process area.

For objects with depth relief, the 23° angle of incidence viewing offset provides useful perspective of the part, greatly aiding interpretation of features.
